yes, you have to level up till you can use the AK on marine side, its the last guns usually for each class, so I do recommend to use other guns till you have unlocked the last guns.Battlefield 3 weapons?
Making out classes (medic, recon, etc.) will make the default weapons for both sides available to you no matter what team you may be on.
