In Battlefield Bad Company 2, why do some people have stars and other things beside their weapons?

I heard this has to do with kills made by that weapon. Is that right? Is it just something to show off or does your weapon improve? In Battlefield Bad Company 2, why do some people have stars and other things beside their weapons?
You earn stars with kills.. the more kills the higher the stars. It starts out bronze, then silver, then gold, then platinum. There's no improvements involved.. just showing off how proficient you are with that weapon.

The gold weapons the other poster referred to are NOT from kills but from special weapons kits you can download. In Battlefield Bad Company 2, why do some people have stars and other things beside their weapons?
show off purposes/kills with the weapon.

you can buy upgrades to the weapons that give the little star, and a new camo on it. but its useless.

and you can get gold and stars like that, that will also show by it, so it could be either one.In Battlefield Bad Company 2, why do some people have stars and other things beside their weapons?
That shows how skilled they are with that weapon and once you reach 5 gold stars it becomes gold or you get a new camo for the gun.
